As summer slowly comes to a close and we all start unpacking our Fall and Winter clothes it has come time to re-discover key pieces in our wardrobe to bring into this next season.

Fall is my favorite time of the year which means I tend to get the “shopping bug” and go out and find all the sweaters, jackets, and boots I can.  But, I have decided this year before I go shopping I will be taking a look through my closet (which I did earlier last week, check out the video here) and finding pieces I can style differently this season before I buy too many new items.

For example, I recently re-discovered these striped shorts I purchased a couple years ago.  Since the weather has yet to cool off completely wearing shorts is not out of the question.  When I purchased these shorts I also got the matching top, as it was a two-piece set (seen here) and a “summer-y” look.  BUT choosing to pair these shorts with a black sweater and booties has given me the ability to wear this look as the weather starts to cool off.

When I am determining whether or not a piece can be “re-discovered” I think about a few key aspects:

Is it a pattern? Patterns can easily pair with solids making it easy to style for multiple seasons.

Is is comfortable? If a piece in your closet is uncomfortable the chances you will wear it on repeat are slim, meaning it might not be the best piece to “re-discover”.

Does it fit? Sometimes our bodies change and clothes that once fit don’t work anymore.  If a piece is too small I recommend getting rid of it BUT if a piece is too large be sure to take it to an alterations place to have it fitted to your current body.

Is it a skirt or dress? Skirts and dresses are some of the easiest pieces to not only dress up but also dress down.  Meaning they are easy to style and a great piece to “re-discover” by changing out the shoes worn or top/jacket that you pair with it.

Are they jeans? Honestly I rarely get rid of jeans.  The only reason I have ever parted with a pair of jeans is when they do not fit anymore or the color has faded.  Jeans are my go-to piece in the Fall and Winter and easy to style.

Trends will come and go but classic pieces will stay in your closet for years.  While I love a trendy piece I tend to look for more classic and wearable pieces for my wardrobe, as I know each year I will be able to pull them out of my closet and “re-discover” them.  But don’t worry I still can’t help myself sometimes and very trendy pieces end up in my wardrobe as well (check back soon and you will see all my Autumn 2018 trends)!
